Market capitalization: how the top 10 cryptocurrencies changed from 2017 to now

Over the past five years, the market capitalization of the crypto world has seen huge changes. From 2017 to today, the market capitalization as reported on sites like CoinMarketCap has risen and fallen by tens of billions of dollars.

What has also changed is the Top 10 Cryptocurrencies, which have not always maintained the same ranking over time.

How market capitalization has changed over the past 5 years

Today's cryptocurrency market capitalization totals $1.08 trillion.

However, this number was even higher a year ago. In 2021, most cryptocurrencies reached their all-time highs in terms of price, so it is only natural that the market capitalization was even higher. As of August 2021, we are talking up to 1.85 trillion dollars.

Between 2017 and 2020, we see steady growth year after year: if in 2018 the market capitalization almost doubled from the previous year from 125 billion USD to 225 billion USD, it rose to 305 billion USD during 2019 and then to 356 billion USD in 2020 .

A very interesting growth is the one that occurs between 2017 and 2018, when after the ICO period the adoption starts to increase and the market capitalization doubles.

What is particularly important, however, is to highlight the period between 2020 and 2021, when the crypto market cap actually more than tripled from 356 billion to 1.85 trillion. 2021 is actually, as we mentioned, the year many cryptocurrencies hit all-time highs and also the year NFTs come into their own and help bring the industry closer to the masses.

Top 10 Cryptocurrencies from 2022 to 2017

As we mentioned, in addition to the total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies, the ranking of cryptocurrencies by market capitalization has also changed over the years, although Bitcoin has always been in the lead.

For example, while in 2017 we found Bitcoin Cash in third place, today there is stablecoin Tether (USDT), in fourth place in 2017 was Ripple (XRP) instead of the current Binance Coin (BNB).

Other changes are also found in other positions, with IOTA, NEM, Monero and Dash now completely out of the top 10, giving way to other stablecoins USD Coin (USDC), Solana, Terra and Dogecoin, at least as of February 2022.

If we then take the top 10 from now, from August 2022, the list changes again and instead of Terra and Dogecoin we find BUSD, Binance stablecoin and Polkadot (which is now in 11th place).

Top 10 cryptocurrencies before 2017

Of course, even before 2017, the market capitalization of cryptocurrencies varied significantly, and the top 10 cryptocurrencies also changed constantly, partly due to the emergence of new projects.

In 2014, Bitcoin (BTC), XRP, Litecoin (LTC) and Dogecoin (DOGE) dominated the scene, after the launch of Monero (XMR), it immediately entered the front ranks.

In 2015, the now unknown StrongHands (SHND) project peeked into the top 10, which is now in 2365th place. Verge (XVG) also entered the ranking in March 2017 and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) in August 2018.

Dash (DASH), Nem (XEM), Stellar (XLM), and EOS (EOS) have also entered the rankings from time to time over the years, from 2014 to the present.
