The transition to PoS in the Goerli testnet is complete
The Ethereum update is getting closer by the day and is expected to happen in the week of September 19, according to a date recently revealed by Ethereum developers. The new PoS system was added to the first Ethereum testnets Ropsten and Sepolia, and the latest implementation took place on the Goerli testnet. The upgrade occurred when the network's total terminal difficulty (TTD) exceeded 10,790,000.
This news follows the controversy surrounding The Merge, when several members of the crypto community plan to fork the chain and create a new version of Ethereum for PoW. Vitalik Buterin recently condemned the PoW fork concept and stablecoin issuer Tether announced its full intention to support the PoS version after the update.
"Tether believes that in order to avoid any disruption to the community, especially when using our tokens in DeFi projects and platforms, it is important that the transition to PoS does not cause confusion and damage to the ecosystem," she stated company. “For this reason, Tether will closely monitor the progress and preparations of this event and will support Ethereum PoS in accordance with the official schedule,” she added.
Ethereum "will reduce energy consumption -200x"
Prior to the implementation of The Merge on the Ethereum blockchain's Goerli testnet, Vitalik Buterin's father, Dmitry Buterin, posted on Facebook about the transition and shared a picture of him playing chess with his son. “You watch Michael Saylor's Youtube videos talking about the 10 commandments. Today, Ethereum teams are preparing to implement The Merge on the Goerli testnet, the last before the merge, which will reduce Ethereum's energy consumption by up to -200x. We are not the same,” wrote Dmitry.
